The Dow Gardens

Dow Gardens is a 110 acre botanical garden featuring formal and informal gardens, including a recently added Children's Garden. More than 600 species of shrubs, trees and flowers can be found on the grounds, including fine specimens of oak, maple, dogwood, crabapple, pine, rhododendron, magnolia and viburnum.

Dow Gardens is owned and operated by The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation.



Whiting Forest

Whiting Forest is part of Dow Gardens. Its emphasis is native plant communities of Central Michigan. The plants included in this project originated 50 miles north or south of Midland County. Because these plants were effectively started from seed, each one is genetically different, thus, demonstrating the long-term tolerance to insect, disease and local conditions.

Whiting Forest is owned and operated by The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation.



Grantee Link—The Midland Center for the Arts (MCFTA)

More than 30 years ago. The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, became the lead donor ($4.1 million) in a $7.8 million campaign to build the Midland Center for the Arts. They also set up a $2.5 million endowment fund. 

Today, the foundation continues to support the Center and its programs. The Midland Center for the Arts building was designed by Alden Dow to promote the relationship between art and science.  The Center's structure houses the Hall of Ideas, Education & Outreach, MATRIX: MIDLAND, Arts Midland: Galleries & School, Midland Community Concert Society, Midland County Historical Society, Music Society, Midland Symphony Orchestra, and Theatre Guild. The combined mission of the MCFTA is to provide resources for the education, entertainment and inspiration of the mid-Michigan region through art, science, history, performances and exhibits.



Grantee Link—The Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network (WIN)

The Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network (WIN) was created to enhance the quality of life in the Saginaw Bay Watershed by creating regional networks of on-the-ground projects that demonstrate sustainability. These projects link economic, environmental and community goals. 

The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, along with other area businesses, individuals and organizations is involved in this area initiative to see that sustainable development (growth and development that serves both man and nature) flourishes in the Tri-County area of Michigan—Midland, Bay City and Saginaw.

The Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF), incorporated in 1975, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership association comprised of more than 481 foundations and corporations making grants for charitable purposes. Their mission to enhance, to improve, and to increase philanthropy in Michigan is accomplished through their primary focus of assisting Michigan grantmakers in their work.
